ThermaNOLE Comfort Lab®

ThermDAC Thermal Manikin Monitoring Software

The ThermaNOLE Comfort Lab® is home to the first dynamic sweating thermal manikin at a public institution in the world. This lab was established in 2020 by its Director, Dr. Meredith McQuerry, an expert in clothing comfort physiology.

The equipment in this lab enables a full systems ensemble approach to measuring how functional apparel impacts human performance. The main equipment in this lab includes a large walk-in environmental chamber, a state-of-the-art ANDI dynamic sweating thermal manikin, and a sweating guarded hot plate.

ANDI is the first and only thermal manikin in the world to sense both heat loss and heat gain through clothing, enabling testing in ambient environments above 35°C, radiant solar loads, and heated wearable technology. ANDI sweats, walks, and replicates human physiological responses in real-time including cardiac output, internal body temperature, sweating rate, skin temperature, skin blood flow, and even how comfortable the wearer feels throughout an activity.

Whether we want to replicate skiing in Aspen or running a marathon in Arizona, ANDI provides us with the capability to determine how the clothing we wear impacts our ability to perform physical activity and occupational tasks.

Services Offered

  • Standard ASTM Test Methods - ASTM F1291: (Thermal Insulation), ASTM F2370 (Evaporative Resistance), ASTM 2732 (Temperature Ratings), etc.
  • Total Heat Loss/Gain Measurements
  • Custom Manikin Physiological Control: simulate occupational environments or physical activities in indoor or outdoor ambient settings while wearing PPE, uniforms, activewear, etc.
  • Dynamic Heat Flux Sensors/Active Chilling Mode: determine both heat loss and/or gain when an external heat load (ambient >35°C, solar load, or heated wearable tech) is introduced to the test scenario
